The CGC was formed in 2006 as a collective body of Masters and PhD students studying Communication at Carleton University in Ottawa. All Communication graduate students are automatically members of the CGC. An executive council is elected to carry out the functions of the CGC, which include workshops, speaker series, professional development events, and social events.
For the last eleven years, the CGC has hosted a graduate communications conference in Ottawa. The conference theme varies year to year to accommodate a variety of topics related to the field of communications. This conference is held on the first Thursday and Friday of March each year.
Elections for the President and Conference Co-Chairs are held at the end of the academic year in April. Elections for all other executive positions are held at the beginning of the fall semester each year. New graduate students are welcomed and encouraged to join as a member at large or to run for one of the executive positions.
